Madison Bumgarner already had a pretty impressive postseason resume heading into last night’s winner-take-all NL Wild Card game. No matter – he improved it.
Bumgarner led the San Francisco Giants to a 3-0 victory over the defending NL champion New York Mets, shutting out the Mets and out-dueling fellow ace Noah Syndergaard. Bumgarner finished with 9 innings pitched, giving up just 4 hits, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts.
The game was tied with no score entering the ninth inning, before the Giants got two on for Connor Gillaspie. Gillaspie, an injury-substitute, crushed the 1-1 pitch from Mets closer, Jeurys Familia, into the right field bullpen to give the Giants a 3-0 lead that Bumgarner would easily defend in the bottom of the inning.
The Giants will play Friday night against the NL Central division champion, Chicago Cubs.
And now, a collection of sad Met fan tweets, sprinkled in with some happy Giants fans. As always, these posts captured by Social Delta:

Madison Bumgarner has a 0.19 ERA in his last 46.2 innings of postseason road games (1 ER). He needs three more outs.

To summarize: Orioles don’t use best reliever, lose on three-run homer. Mets do use best reliever, lose on three-run homer. Math that.

So who else besides Madison Bumgarner has thrown 2 shutouts in winner-take-all postseason games? Nobody. Of course. And both on the road
