In February, the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers gave us a fairly intriguing, but ultimately sloppy and sluggish Super Bowl. Last night, in the rematch to open the season, they made up for it. The Broncos defeated the Panthers in a thrilling game down to the very last kick, making everyone excited that the NFL is back.
The Broncos won 21-20 in dramatic fashion, as Panthers’ kicker Graham Gano’s 50-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left. Led by the new starting QB, Trevor Siemian, the Broncos came back from down 17-7 in the fourth quarter. Siemian finished 18/26 for 178 yards, a touchdown, and two picks. Despite the pedestrian box score, Siemian showed flashes of ability and poise, to the delight of many Bronco fans.
C.J. Anderson carried the bulk of the load for the Broncos on offense, finishing with two total TD’s, 1 rushing + 1 receiving, and 92 rushing yards to go with 47 of the receiving variety.
Cam Newton had a fine game for the Panthers, though it wasn’t enough – he finished 18/33 for 194 yards, two total touchdowns (one throwing, one rushing), and a pick. Wide receiver, Kelvin Benjamin, who missed all of the Panthers’ magical 2015 season with a leg injury, had a nice return game, catching 6 passes for 91 yards and a score.
The game went back and forth in the fourth quarter, with Carolina in position to take the lead, but Gano’s kick missed left. By most accounts, this was an exciting game throughout, with a two-score comeback, and the action coming down to the very last play.
Aside from the X’s and O’s, the game was still full of buzzworthy moments on social media. Broncos linebacker, Brandon Marshall, added to the rise of NFL athletes taking a stand by doing the opposite, not standing, during the national anthem. Not everyone approved of this. Reaction was mixed, but if you like, see some of the tweets surrounding this around the 8:33 pm mark in the Social Delta graph.
For a less divisive buzz, midway through the game, cameras panned to Cam Newton on the bench who was – flossing. Quite literally, he was using floss.

Okay, so quite a few people used that joke on Twitter:
